Day 1 - May 17 – Depart USA
Depart on your overnight international flight.
Day 2 - May 18 - Arrive in Paris, Giverny & Caen
Arrive this morning in Paris and travel north to visit the village of Giverny, where Claude Monet painted and lived at the turn of the 20th Century. See his house and gardens, filled with inspirations for his work. Finish the day in Caen, liberated by the Allies in July 1944. Dinner is included this evening. (D)
Day 3 - May 19 – St. Mere Eglise, Pont du Hoc, & Caen
Today walk the town of St. Mere Eglise. Here the Allies parachuted in and began the D-Day invasion. Continue to Pointe du Hoc, site of intense fighting as the Allies came ashore. This afternoon, travel to Caen, the site of heavy fighting as the allied forces moved inland off the beaches. The history of the city is reflected in the Chateau de Caen, a castle built by William the Conqueror prior to the Battle of Hastings. Today it houses a museum that reflects its history. See the Memorial for Peace here. Return to your hotel in Caen for overnight. (B)
Day 4 - May 20 – Normandy Beaches & Bayeux
You will head for the beaches of Normandy, where on June 6, 1944, Allied forces began the invasion of Europe to liberate it from the grip of Nazi Germany. Visit the D-Day Museum and the cemeteries. Continue to Bayeux, home to the Bayeux Tapestry, created for William the Conqueror to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. It is on display here at a local museum. Continue to your hotel near Mont St. Michel for overnight. (B)
Day 5 - May 21 – Mont St. Michel
This morning you will tour Mont St. Michel, an Island consecrated in 708. It was one of the first places of the cult for the Archangel Michel on Gargan’s Mount. The abbey presents a big panorama of the medieval architecture from the XI to the XVI th century. Return to your hotel for overnight. (B)
Day 6 - May 22 – Versailles & Paris
Cross Normandy and the French countryside to Versailles. Enjoy exploring the home of Louis the 14th and where the World War I treaty was signed. Wander the impressive gardens. Finish the day in Paris for overnight. (B)
Day 7 - May 23 – Paris
This morning head to the Ile de la Cité, home to Notre Dame, recently badly damaged by fire. This 850 year old Gothic Cathedral is in the process of restoration. From here, you will visit Saint Chapelle, the private chapel of kings illuminated with streams of colored light through towering stained-glass windows. Enjoy a panoramic tour of the city, including seeing the Seine, the Champs-Elysees, Arc de Triomphe, with a visit to the Eiffel Tower. Then take a ride up the funicular to Montmartre and Sacré-Coeur. This cathedral looks out over Paris from the place where St. Denis was martyred. While here, wander the art shops and stores that line the streets. Return to the hotel or remain here and watch the sun set on Paris. (B)
Day 8 - May 24 - Return to USA
Return home with memories of Normandy and Paris or stay in Paris on an extension.
